When dizziness, vertigo or balance disorders regularly hijack your health, it can be hard to keep moving. But science shows that consistent, incremental challenges to your body are what helps you to heal over time.
To get optimal results, it is important to have a proper medical diagnosis and a relevant treatment plan. Unfortunately, many medical professionals can be indifferent to your symptoms, have no diagnosis, or mis-diagnosis your situation. So! Be sure to understand as well as test the information that you are receiving from professionals. Don't give up! Keep moving.
Most importantly, keep looking for the best medical support, the doctor(s) that hear you, see you, and care!
No matter who your care team is, it is imperative that you take an active role in your recovery.
I found neurological physical therapy to be the first, big step in my recovery. For my condition, ophthalmologist & orthoptist were a close second. EMDR (eye movement desensitization & reprocessing therapy) was also very helpful to overcome the anxiety issues associated with chronic dizziness & vertigo. Lastly, my Pilates & Somatic Therapy Certification were indispensable. I found ways to create neuroplasticity through movement constantly. It didn't require classes or special equipment, just time and effort.
Using a variety of activities, I was able to build back my body's tolerance to movement. By engaging the science-based methods of strength conditioning, biofeedback and nervous system regulation, I began to avoid symptoms and recover from episodes more quickly.
Over time with great patience, I was able trust my body again, so that I could get back the activities that I loved! As the World Turns, so do I. And that's okay with me.
